Balance Update: Why Leveling Up Feels Smoother Now
If you've been playing Dovion for a while, you may have felt it without quite putting words to it: leveling up feels more consistent than it used to. That's not just a feeling. We reworked the XP curve, and since this balance change touches the very core of progression, we owe you a full explanation: what was wrong, what we changed, and how we decide on changes like this.
The problem: the infamous "wall"
In a leveled game, the difficulty of progression is supposed to climb — that's normal, it's even what gives high levels their value. But there's climbing... and there's slamming into a wall. The old XP curve created what we call a wall: at certain mid-tier milestones, the cost of the next level exploded so much that progress seemed to grind to a halt. You'd play, play well even, and the XP bar wouldn't budge.
The classic complaint we kept hearing: "the start is great, and then suddenly it just stops moving." But in Dovion, levels aren't just numbers — every level grants stat points to spend, and levels 5, 15, 30, and 45 unlock ship evolutions. An XP wall is therefore a content wall: players who'd never see their lineage through to the end. Unacceptable to us.
What we changed (in spirit)
We won't drown you in formulas, but the principle is easy to grasp: the curve was smoothed out. The cost of each level still increases — reaching level 50 remains an achievement — but the ramp is more gradual, with no brutal spikes in the middle of the journey.
The goal we set for ourselves fits in one sentence: at any level, the next milestone should always feel reachable within a reasonable amount of play time. You can slow down, but you should never get stuck. The major progression milestones — and what each one unlocks — are detailed in our XP and levels guide.
What this actually changes for you
- Evolutions arrive at a more natural pace. The level 15 choice — picking your lineage — is no longer an expedition, and levels 30 then 45 come into view without feeling hopeless.
- Stat points drop more regularly, which makes builds feel more alive: you're thinking about your allocation throughout the match, not just at the start. If you're not sure where to put your points, the stats mini-guide has you covered.
- Dying mid-run stings a bit less: rebuilding your progress is less discouraging when the curve isn't crushing you.
And for anyone who wants to optimize every minute of play, we've compiled the best routes in leveling fast from 1 to 30.
How we decide on tuning like this
A word on the method, because it explains our balancing philosophy. We cross-reference two sources: what we measure (how matches actually play out, where players drop off) and what you tell us — forum feedback is often the first signal that something's off. Then we adjust in small increments, and watch again. No grand balancing revolution: regular corrections, explained here when they're significant.
And let's be clear on one point: smoothing progression doesn't mean giving it away. Level 50 is still earned. The difference is that the path there is now a sail — with headwinds sometimes — rather than a cliff face.
Feel the difference for yourself
The best test is your own: start a match, aim for your next milestone, and tell us if the progression feels fair. If a stretch still feels too steep or too flat, the forum is there for exactly that. Fair winds and happy leveling: Play Dovion for free.
