Reading the Minimap Like a Captain
Between broadsides, your eyes should keep drifting to the same spot: the minimap. On Dovion, this small screen overlay splits players into two categories — those who discover danger when it lands on them, and those who saw it coming from a mile away. This guide gets you into the second category.
Your permanent lookout
The Dovion archipelago is huge: roughly 8,200 units across, dozens of islands, several biomes, and a misty center where anything can happen. There's no keeping all of that in your head by instinct alone. The minimap plays the role of the lookout atop the mast: it places you in the bigger picture at all times, without making you look away from the action for more than a second.
The right habit is simple to state and slow to build: a regular, quick, systematic glance. After every sale, after every fight, before every course change. Like a car's rearview mirror.
The golden marker: a bounty is live
This is the single most valuable piece of information on the minimap: a golden marker flags a bounty target somewhere on the map. In practical terms, some ship out there is worth chasing — and everyone knows it at the same time as you.
Two readings, depending on your situation:
- Are you strong and mobile? The marker is an invitation. Go for it, but keep in mind other hunters saw the same thing: the area around a bounty quickly turns into a hornet's nest. Our guide to chasing bounties breaks down how to get there first — and leave alive.
- Are YOU the marker? Then the minimap becomes your alarm system: expect visitors, sell your cargo fast, and play tight.
Getting your bearings with the A1-K11 grid
Dovion overlays its world with a coordinate grid, like a nautical chart: squares run from A1 to K11, the letter giving vertical position and the number horizontal position. It's the ultimate orientation tool:
- To remember your good spots: that ore-rich rock, that quiet selling point — memorize their square.
- To set meeting points: "everyone to D7" is enough to rally your squad, especially in a private room.
- To tell your war stories: a battle recap with coordinates is instantly more believable.
The archipelago's full geography (biomes, hot zones, the center) is broken down in our guide to the Dovion map.
The three captain's habits
- Look before you cross. A long trip to a selling point should be planned: a glance at the minimap saves you from naively cutting through a hostile area.
- Know where the center is — and where you stand. The central lagoon is the richest and most dangerous zone in the game, fog and bosses included. While your ship is still fragile, the minimap mostly serves to... keep you away from it. The day you feel ready, read how to survive the center first.
- Cross-reference the map with announcements. Events (caravans, legendary ships, bosses) get announced on screen: matching those announcements to your position on the minimap tells you whether to charge in or flee.
The captain's eye takes practice
Nobody's born with the minimap reflex; it comes from playing, from getting caught out once or twice, then never again. The best exercise is still practice: Play Dovion for free and set yourself a simple rule starting with your next match — a glance at the map every thirty seconds. Your survival rate will thank you.
