Gold or XP: What to Prioritize at Each Stage of the Match
Every Dovion match has you juggling two forms of wealth: gold and XP. Both grow as you play, both make you want more — and yet they follow completely different rules. Knowing which to prioritize, and when, is one of the most profitable calls in the game. Let's break it down.
Two resources, two logics
Start by grasping the difference in nature:
- Gold is fragile wealth. You earn it by mining rocks, fishing, sinking pirates and players — but it piles up in your hold, and it only truly counts once sold at a selling point. If you sink before that, it's all gone. Gold is potential in transit.
- XP is power already earned. It raises your level (up to 50), and every level grants stat points; at the 5, 15, 30, and 45 milestones, it unlocks your hull evolutions. Once earned, it works for you immediately.
In one sentence: gold makes promises, XP keeps them. The whole strategy flows from that.
Early game: chase the milestones
In the opening moments, your priority is crystal clear: reach level 5, then level 15. Level 5 opens your first path choice (Goélette, Brigantin, or Chalutier), level 15 the real choice of your match — your lineage and its active ability. Every minute spent in the Chaloupe is a minute of vulnerability.
Good news: you don't really have to choose between the two resources at this stage. Base activity — mining, fishing, selling — feeds your overall progression either way. Stick to one rule: sell your hold often, because early on you're fragile and unsold gold is the first thing death erases. The details of this early-game grind are in earning gold fast and how XP and levels work.
Mid game: secure the gold, meter the risk
Between levels 15 and 30, the equation shifts. You're strong enough to take risks, rich enough to have something to lose. This is where the trade-off becomes real:
- A swelling hold means prioritize the sale. The bigger your cargo, the more of a rational target you become for everyone else. Sale timing is an art: never wait for "just one more rock" once your hold is already heavy.
- A milestone within reach means prioritize XP. One or two levels from an evolution (30, especially), push the pace: the new hull is worth more than a few extra cargoes.
- An exceptional opportunity means go for it. An announced event, a visible bounty: these spikes of gain are worth bending the plan for.
The big XP boosts
When XP is what you're short on, Dovion offers shortcuts that change everything:
- A mermaid sold at the altar. The central lagoon's black market pays a captured mermaid in a huge amount of XP — the biggest progression accelerator in the game, at the cost of a dangerous trip. Full instructions in the lagoon black market.
- Referrals. Introduce a friend to the game: once your referral has played for ten minutes, you both get +250 banked XP.
And remember XP is also a currency: a revenge ticket costs 800 XP. Having some in reserve is buying yourself a second chance on big-match nights.
The verdict in one rule
If you only remember one thing: prioritize XP whenever an evolution milestone is within reach; prioritize selling as soon as your hold becomes a treasure chest. Everything else is a matter of circumstance — and nerve.
