Getting Started on Dovion: 10 Tips That Change Everything

· 4 min read · by the Dovion crew

Your first Dovion matches probably look something like this: you mine three bits of ore, run into a ship twice your size, and go down. Normal — every Dovion beginner goes through it. The good news is that a handful of simple habits are enough to turn that chaotic start into a steady climb up the leaderboard. Here are the 10 tips we wish we'd known from our very first Chaloupe.

The 10 tips, from the most vital to the most cunning

1. Mine away from the action

Your starting Chaloupe won't win any duels. Ore on the rocks, fishing: those are your first sources of gold. Pick a quiet corner of the archipelago and practice without looking for a fight. The first few minutes of a match exist for one thing only: banking enough XP to reach level 5 in one piece.

2. Sell your cargo often

The gold you collect piles up in your hold — it only truly counts once it's sold at a trading post. A full hold makes you a juicy target: sell early, sell often. This is THE lesson every beginner learns the hard way, watching their twenty-minute haul enrich the player who just sank them. Build the opposite reflex starting now.

3. Learn to read the mini-map

It's your sixth sense. The golden marker signals a bounty target: a golden opportunity… or a magnet for hunters. When in doubt early on, treat it as a zone to avoid. Also get in the habit of glancing at it every few seconds: sinkings that come "out of nowhere" almost always trace back to an ignored mini-map.

4. Leave the center to the big ships

The central lagoon is the richest zone in the game, but its thick fog hides bosses and aggressive mermaids. As long as your ship is modest, stick to the outskirts. The center will wait until you're ready — we cover it all in our guide to the center of the map.

5. Pick your level-5 path based on your playstyle

Three options: Goélette (schooner, fast, skirmish), Brigantin (brig, tough, warfare) or Chalutier (trawler, big hold, economy). There's no wrong choice, only a choice that doesn't fit you. Our comparison of Goélette, Brigantin or Chalutier will help you decide.

6. Space fires, E makes the difference

Space fires your guns. But starting at level 15, your line unlocks an active ability on the E key, with a visible cooldown. Ramming charge, torpedo fan, full broadside: every line has its own, and it's what wins the close duels. Use it early, miss it often, learn it fast.

7. Open mystery barrels

A random bonus awaits inside: sometimes regeneration — precious after a skirmish — sometimes the rare golden bubble that reflects every shot you take for a few seconds. The detour is almost always worth it — details in the mystery barrel guide.

8. Listen to event announcements

Corsairs, raiders, skiffs, caravans, the Black Pearl: everything is announced on screen. An announcement is free information — either a threat to flee, or loot to prepare for. Early on, stick to defensive reading: a pirate wave announced while your hold is full is your cue to rush and sell. And if a trumpet sounds for the Colonel or Haaland (parody characters in the game, worth repeating), be wary.

9. Claim your chests and manage your consumables

From the home screen, quests and chests are waiting for you. Consumable boosts are precious — save them for the moments that truly matter instead of burning them on a match that's already lost.

10. Die usefully

Sinking is part of the game — even the top of the leaderboard eventually goes down. When you die, the game offers you a clip of your final moments (about 15 to 30 seconds, shareable) — watch it: that's often when you spot your mistake, the blind spot you didn't watch, the escape you triggered a second too late. And if the match was truly worth it, a revenge ticket lets you pick it back up right where you left off.

The real secret: consistency

None of these tips will turn you into a legendary captain in one evening. But put together, they change everything: more secured gold, fewer avoidable deaths, better evolutions at levels 5, 15, 30 and 45. For the big picture of the game, keep the complete Dovion guide handy, and once gold becomes your priority, our methods for farming efficiently will take over.
