Dovion.io: The Complete Guide to Get Started
Dovion.io is a multiplayer naval battle .io game, free and playable directly in your browser, on PC as well as mobile. No download, no account required: you type in a nickname and you're at sea in under 20 seconds. Behind that simplicity hides a surprisingly rich world — a pastel-colored archipelago inspired by Studio Ghibli, bosses, pirates, 31 ships to unlock… and even football in the middle of the ocean. This guide covers everything you need to get started.
What exactly is Dovion?
Dovion belongs to the big family of .io games, like Agar.io or Diep.io: a real-time match, top-down view, where everyone fights it out in the same arena. Here, the arena is an ocean, and your avatar is a ship.
A few things that define the game:
- Free and instant: you play as a guest, no sign-up needed. An optional Google login lets you save your progress to the cloud.
- Made in France, with a deliberately humorous tone (wait until you meet the Colonel…).
- Authoritative server: gold, HP and kills are all calculated server-side. There's no way to cheat by tampering with your client.
- No free chat: communication happens through emotes, with a nickname filter. Wholesome vibe, cartoon violence, suitable from around age 12.
The gameplay loop: mine, sell, evolve
You start out in a Chaloupe (rowboat), the small starting ship. From there, everything revolves around two resources:
- Gold: you earn it by mining ore from rocks, fishing, and sinking pirates and players. Watch out — gold piles up in your hold, and you need to sell it at trading posts to secure it.
- XP: it raises your level, up to level 50. Every level gives you points to spend on your stats, like Rate of Fire or Ram (collision damage).
At levels 5, 15, 30 and 45, you pick a ship evolution, exactly like the classes in Diep.io. The end goal: survive, climb the leaderboard shown at the top of the screen, and rule your corner of the sea.
The ship tree: 31 hulls, 9 lines
This is the heart of Dovion's replayability. At level 5, three paths open up: the Goélette (schooner, fast), the Brigantin (brig, tough) and the Chalutier (trawler, big hold, economy-focused). At level 15, you pick your line among nine — ramming, torpedoes, stealth, broadsides, mortar, lightning, traps, armed trade or the depths.
Each line has one active ability on the E key (with a visible cooldown), while Space stays the shoot button: the Narval's Charge, the Torpedo Fan, the Grande Bordée (full double broadside), the Mortar's lobbed shell… There's even a secret hull, the Hollandais Doré (Golden Dutchman), visible in the gallery — how to get it stays a deliberate mystery. For the full breakdown of the nine paths, go read the complete ship tree guide.
A living world: biomes, bosses and events
The archipelago is laid out on a coordinate grid (cells A1 to K11) and crosses several biomes: forests, ice floes, volcanoes… and above all the central lagoon, drowned in thick fog. It's the most dangerous and the richest zone in the game: bosses, lighthouses, and a black market where selling a captured mermaid earns you a huge amount of XP. Full details in the Dovion map and its zones.
The server keeps all of it running constantly: corsairs, raiders, skiffs (pirate dinghies), escorted merchant caravans, the Black Pearl, a helicopter, bosses like the Guardian or the Admiral, not to mention the parody characters (Colonel Mbappé and Haaland — purely humorous winks with no connection whatsoever to the real players). And between 30 and 48 AI-controlled ships populate every room: there's always action, even at 3 a.m.
Playing with friends and beyond the match
Dovion is also a social game. Private rooms let you meet up with friends through a simple invite link (dovion.io/?room=NAME), PC and mobile alike, and a streamer mode exists for content creators. The "Challenge a Friend" referral system rewards word of mouth: once your referred friend has played for 10 minutes, you both earn +250 banked XP. And when you die, the game offers you a video clip of your final moments (~15-30 seconds) to share — the best way to tell the story of your finest defeat.
Five habits to get you started right
- Sell your cargo often: sinking with a full hold hurts a lot.
- Watch the mini-map: a golden marker signals a bounty target.
- Avoid the center early on: the fog rarely forgives Chaloupes.
- Pick your level-5 path based on your playstyle, not the coolest-sounding name.
- Open mystery barrels: regeneration, or even the rare golden bubble that reflects shots back.
