Skiffs: Small Boats, Big Trouble
You can never be too wary of small things. Dovion's skiffs — those pirate dinghies that show up as a regular event, announced on screen like it should be — are the perfect illustration of that principle: harmless individually, one of the dumbest causes of sinking in the game collectively. Here's how to never get nibbled to death by the foot soldiers of piracy again.
What exactly is a skiff?
A skiff is a small pirate dinghy, controlled by the server like every event in the game. In the local piracy hierarchy, they sit at the bottom rung: below corsairs and raiders, way below the Black Pearl. They're the archipelago's mosquitoes — and like mosquitoes, their danger comes down to two things: numbers, and your carelessness.
Their arrival follows the universal rule of Dovion events: an on-screen announcement warns you. From there, it's on you to adjust your navigation.
Why they sink so many players
The skiff trap is psychological. Face a Dreadnought, and you flee without thinking. Face a tiny dinghy, and you shrug it off — and that's exactly when trouble starts:
- The pile-up effect: every trivial skirmish chips away at your HP. Three dinghies later, you're no longer in shape to face the real danger that, unlike you, didn't miss the announcement.
- Harassment at the worst time: skiffs excel at bothering you while you're mining, fishing, or heading back to sell — in other words, when you're focused elsewhere and loaded with gold.
- The fatal distraction: while you're getting worked up over a dinghy, the mini-map keeps telling an important story. Plenty of players "sunk by a skiff" were actually sunk by whatever they stopped watching.
The anti-skiff playbook
- Take the announcement seriously, even if the threat seems trivial. Adjust your route, head toward a trading post if your hold is full.
- Don't stop for them. A skiff chasing you while you keep moving is far less dangerous than a skiff you fight at a standstill, engine off, surrounded by its buddies.
- Clear them in volleys, not duels. These are small hulls: your normal rate of fire is plenty. The mistake is spending your active ability on them — save your E key for threats that deserve it.
- Bank the bonus. Sinking pirates earns gold, and skiffs are the easiest pirates in the game to sink. A well-handled wave is pure net income at minimal risk — the perfect fun-farming addition to your gold-earning methods.
Skiffs as a training ground
Here's the real hidden gift of these dinghies: they're the ideal training ground. Handling a wave of skiffs teaches you exactly the reflexes that will save your hull against serious threats — shooting on the move, managing multiple targets, reading announcements, mini-map discipline. The day corsairs and raiders show up, or worse, the Black Pearl, those instincts will make the difference.
Beginner? Treat every skiff wave as a free lesson paid in gold. Advanced? Treat it as a recreational break between two center-of-the-map expeditions.
