Communicating Without Chat: Dovion's Emotes

· 2 min read · by the Dovion crew

There's one thing you'll never see on Dovion: a chat window flooded with insults. Here, communication runs through emotes, and only emotes. This isn't an oversight or a "coming soon" feature: it's a deliberate design choice. And once you've tried it, it's hard to go back.

Why Dovion has no chat

Anyone who's spent time on online multiplayer games knows the tune: free chat attracts trash talk, spam, and toxicity the way a full cargo hold attracts pirates. Dovion made a call: no free chat at all. Instead, an emote system for self-expression, and a server-side name filter to block inappropriate usernames.

The result: a game where the violence stays cartoonish and the atmosphere stays healthy, even for younger players (the game suits ages roughly 12 and up). Parents appreciate it, players do too — nobody misses all-caps rage torrents. We cover the full philosophy behind this choice in why Dovion has no chat (and isn't sorry).

What an emote can say

You'd be surprised how much you can express without writing a single word. A well-placed emote, depending on context, can be:

Timing is everything. An emote sent right after dodging a full broadside says more than three lines of text ever could.

The language of the game itself

Beyond emotes, Dovion speaks through movement. Following a ship at a respectful distance is a de facto alliance offer. Circling a beginner without firing is letting them be. And to organize something specific with friends, the map provides the perfect tool: the coordinate grid (squares A1 to K11) lets you set a meeting point — "everyone to E5" works perfectly well outside the game, on your usual messaging app, especially in a private room with friends.

A choice that changes the mood

This system has an unexpected consequence: rivalries stay in the game. Your worst enemy of the night can't ruin your evening with words; they can only come after you on the water. Grudges get settled with cannons, not keyboards. That's the .io spirit at its best: simple, direct, and centered on the game itself.

And if you're playing as a family or looking for family-friendly online games, take a look at our selection of chill .io games — Dovion features prominently there, precisely because of this choice.

Your turn

The best way to understand what "communicating without chat" means is to try it: Play Dovion for free, cross paths with another captain, and send your first emote. You'll see — you'll understand each other just fine.
