Mastering Dovion's Joysticks on Phone
A mobile game joystick can be tamed. On Dovion, touch piloting relies on two virtual sticks and a handful of assist buttons — a classic layout for .io games on phone, with a few naval-combat quirks of its own. This guide breaks down each command and the muscle memory that goes with it.
Left stick: heading
Your left thumb holds the rudder: the left stick sets the ship's heading. Unlike a character on foot, a ship has inertia — it doesn't pivot on the spot. Three habits to build:
- Anticipate your turns: start turning before the obstacle, not right in front of it.
- Short taps beat a crushed thumb: correct your course with small nudges, like a real helmsman.
- Think in trajectories: around islands, the shortest route isn't always the safest.
Right stick: aim and fire
The right stick handles shooting: you aim your guns and fire with the same motion. It's the stick that demands the most practice, since it combines aiming and rate of fire. The classic beginner trap: staring at your own ship instead of the target. Watch where your cannonballs land, adjust, and remember that projectiles travel — aim where the enemy will be a second from now.
When your line unlocks its active ability (the equivalent of the E key on PC), a dedicated button joins your screen, with a visible cooldown. Save it for the decisive moments.
Auto-combat, flee, turbo: your virtual crew
Three assist buttons round out the sticks:
- Auto-combat: the game handles shooting, you handle the route. Perfect for learning to steer without spreading yourself thin, or for calm farming.
- Flee: the survival reflex. When things go south, this button gets you out while your brain is still panicking.
- Turbo: a burst of speed, used to dodge a volley, cut off a trajectory… or put distance between you and trouble.

- Find your grip before chasing performance: set your phone down, settle your thumbs, and play a few low-stakes matches.
- Never lock both thumbs on one precise action at the same time: always keep one thumb mentally "free" to react.
- Use the terrain: islands block shots. On mobile, fighting near a coastline more than makes up for slightly less precise aim.
- Sell your cargo often: a thumb slip costs more when your hold is full.
