"The E Key: Every Active Ability Explained"
In Dovion, two keys tell two different stories. Space is your gunfire: the daily bread, the motion you repeat a thousand times a match. E is your line's active ability: the rare move, the one that defines your ship and, used well, decides a fight. Every line has exactly one, with a cooldown shown on screen. Here's the full rundown of the 9 E-key abilities — and, more importantly, how to get the most out of each.
One line, one active, one cooldown
The principle is deliberately simple: at level 15, by picking one of the 9 lines in the tree, you pick your active ability AT THE SAME TIME. No spell menu, no combos to memorize — one ship, one power, one displayed cooldown.
That economy of means has a consequence: your E key is precious. Trigger it at the wrong moment, and you sail "naked" for the whole cooldown. The best players are recognized less by their reflexes than by their discipline on this key.
The 9 abilities, line by line
- Charge (Narval — Corsaire, Corsaire noir, Trirème des Sirènes): a ramming rush whose damage scales with your speed. Watch the backlash: charging into empty water stuns you instead. Full details in our Narval guide.
- Éventail de torpilles (Torpedo Fan) (Torpilles — Torpilleur, Cotre-lame, Foudre des mers): 3 simultaneous torpedoes, 5 at level 45. The ultimate punishment weapon.
- Voiles Mortes (Dead Sails) (Spectre — on the Vaisseau Fantôme): stealth — you vanish from enemy screens. The most psychological ability in the game.
- Grande Bordée (Great Broadside) (Bordées — Frégate, Navire de ligne, Dreadnought): both flanks fire a simultaneous volley; the recoil can double as a dash, the famous recoil-surf.
- Obus en cloche (Arcing Shell) (Mortier — Bombarde, Monitor cuirassé, Titan cuirassé): a cursor-aimed indirect shot that sails right over islands and obstacles.
- Chaîne d'orage (Storm Chain) (Orage — Galion, Galion royal, Galion d'Orage): hold E to charge, release — the bolt bounces from hull to hull. Devastating against groups.
- Estacades (Barricades) (Pièges — Caboteur, Forteresse flottante, Brûle-Flots): floating log barricades worth roughly 250 HP that block ships and cannonballs and damage on contact. The Brûle-Flots can set them ablaze.
- Pavillon d'Armada (Armada Banner) (Flottille — Marchand armé, Croiseur marchand, Armada marchande): commands an escort to protect your precious cargo.
- Gong des profondeurs (Deep Gong) (Profondeurs — Baleinier, Jonque au trésor, Léviathan des Abysses): heals everything around you and calls in whales.
Three rules for playing your E key well
- Know your cooldown by heart. The recharge timer is shown on screen — build it into your rhythm. Engaging with your active ready versus your active on cooldown are two completely different decisions.
- An active isn't a panic button. Most abilities shine when they're PREPARED: a Charge with momentum behind it, a Storm Chain charged fully, an Estacade dropped before the assault. Used in a scramble, they almost always disappoint.
- Read other players' E keys. Every enemy has an active too — knowing which one is already knowing what to fear. A galleon closing in without firing is probably charging its lightning; a corsair creating distance is probably winding up its rush. Our article on enemy silhouettes will help you recognize them from afar.
What's next?
The E key is the concentrated identity of each line: nine powers, nine playstyles, nine ways to sail. The best way to find yours is still to try them all — one match per line, and you'll know.
