Boosts and Consumables: When to Use Them
There are two kinds of players: those who hoard their boosts "for later" until the end of time, and those who burn them the moment they get them on a match with nothing on the line. Dovion's boosts and consumables deserve better than these two extremes — here's how to get the most out of them, from the home-screen chest to the revenge ticket.
What exactly are we talking about?
Dovion offers consumable boosts: limited-use advantages, as opposed to your permanent progression (levels, stats, hulls). The consumable family also includes the most famous of them all, the revenge ticket, which lets you resume your match after dying.
The distinction matters: your progression always stays with you, your consumables run out. That "single-use" nature is exactly what makes timing so central.
Where to get them
Three main pipelines feed your reserves:
- The home screen: quests and objectives to complete, and chests to claim right from the home screen. It's the free, regular pipeline — get in the habit of stopping there before launching a match, letting chests sit unclaimed is pure waste.
- XP: for revenge tickets specifically, you can buy them for 800 XP each. Your experience reserve becomes a currency — an interesting trade-off we cover in the revenge tickets guide.
- The shop: the optional route, for those who want to support the game. Useful reminder: Dovion stays 100% playable for free, the shop is never a required stop.
And don't forget the consumable the game hands out on the open sea: the mystery barrel and its random bonuses, regeneration or the rare golden bubble.
The real question: when to use them
A boost used at the wrong time is a boost half wasted. Three principles to stop wasting them:
- Activate a boost when you can exploit it, not the moment you get it. The excitement of receiving it is the worst advisor: ask yourself whether the next few minutes of play will actually benefit from the advantage.
- Align the boost with a specific goal. An expedition to the center, a bounty hunt, an intensive farming session: a consumable shines when it amplifies a plan, not when it just tags along with aimless wandering.
- Don't wait for perfection either. The player who saves everything "for the perfect match" ends up with an unused stockpile. A good moment beats an ideal one that never arrives.
The textbook case: the revenge ticket
The revenge ticket perfectly illustrates the art of timing. Using it on a mediocre match means paying to prolong the mediocrity. Holding onto it while an exceptional match sinks means watching your investment go down with the ship. The simple rule: the ticket exists to save matches that are worth something — a high level reached, a leaderboard spot, an ongoing streak.
The beginner's mistake (and the veteran's)
- Beginner: spending everything right away. Your first matches end quickly anyway; your consumables pay off ten times better once you survive long enough to actually cash them in.
- Veteran: hoarding. If your stockpile only ever grows, you're playing below your means. Consumables are made to be consumed — it's practically in the name.
One last note: home-screen quests keep refilling your reserves regularly. The more you play, the more the pipeline turns — the game's generosity rewards consistency, as our complete guide reminds you.
