Behind the Scenes: Why Cheating Is (Almost) Impossible

· 3 min read · by the Dovion crew

In a lot of online games, it only takes one cheater to ruin the night for fifty other players. It's a well-known plague in .io games, and we took it seriously from Dovion's very first day. Our main defense boils down to two slightly jargon-y words: authoritative server. Today we'll explain what that means — in plain English — and why it makes cheating almost impossible on Dovion.

The simple picture: the dealer and the players

Picture a card game. Two ways to run it:

  1. Every player writes down their own score on a piece of paper, and everyone trusts everyone.
  2. A neutral dealer keeps the books, deals the cards, and announces the scores.

A lot of online games run (at least partly) on model 1: the game installed on the player's machine calculates important things, and the server just takes its word for it. That's simpler to build... and it's a wide-open door: all it takes is modifying your own game to "score" whatever you want.

Dovion runs on model 2. The server is the dealer: it, and only it, calculates your gold, your HP, and your kills. Your browser just displays what the server tells it, and sends it your intentions: "I'm turning left," "I'm firing." That's it.

What that actually blocks

With this model, the classic .io game cheats sink like a stone:

In short: never trust the client. That's the golden rule, and it protects everyone, including you.

Why "almost" impossible?

Out of honesty. No system on Earth stops 100% of clever people, and claiming otherwise would be marketing spin. Every online game still has some possible abusive behaviors — like flooding the server with messages to slow it down. We have defenses against that too: rate limits and temporary bans for clients who cross the line.

And this is where we deliberately stop going into detail. Describing our detection mechanisms precisely would be handing a manual to bad actors. Behind the scenes, sure; the vault blueprints, no.

The price we pay (and why we happily pay it)

An authoritative server doesn't come free: it has to simulate the ENTIRE match, constantly — every ship, every cannonball, every siren — for full rooms, without choking. That's more demanding than a server that just relays messages. It's taken a lot of optimization on our part, especially since we've saddled ourselves with a pretty radical technical constraint we talk about in behind the scenes of our zero-dependency server.

But the payoff is worth it: a leaderboard you can actually believe in. When you see a name at the top of the Dovion leaderboard, that player genuinely mined, fished, sank ships, and survived to get there. If you want to understand what really affects your online performance, we bust a few myths in ping, latency, and reflexes — and for common questions about the game, head to the FAQ.
