The 8 Beginner Mistakes That Sink You (and How to Avoid Them)
Everyone sinks dumbly at the start. It's practically a rite of passage. But some beginner mistakes come up so often on Dovion that you can basically list them out — and save yourself dozens of shipwrecks with ten minutes of reading. Here are the eight classic faults, from costliest to sneakiest, with the fix for each.
The eight mistakes, one by one
1. Sailing with a full hold for hours
Mistake number one, by a wide margin. Gold piled in your hold doesn't really exist yet: it only counts once sold at a selling point. If you sink, it all goes down with you. The fix: sell often, sell early, especially while you're still fragile. Our guide to managing your hold turns this into a real strategy.
2. Rushing to the center at the start of the match
The central lagoon is the richest zone in the game — and the deadliest: thick fog, bosses, and every opportunist the archipelago has to offer. In a Chaloupe (starting hull) or a level-5 hull, you're not an adventurer there, you're a snack. Stay on the fringes, grow, and only go in with your eyes open.
3. Ignoring the minimap and the announcements
The game warns you constantly: the golden bounty marker on the minimap, on-screen event announcements (caravans, the Black Pearl, bosses...). The beginner watches their own ship; the survivor watches the whole screen. Build the habit of a regular glance at the map — we teach you how to read it like a captain.
4. Provoking mermaid groups
A lone mermaid is manageable. A school of mermaids is a different story: they turn aggressive in numbers, and their cry can rally other mermaids into the fight. Plenty of beginners discover this mechanic by dying in it. Approach mermaids with a plan, or not at all.
5. Wasting your active ability
Starting at level 15, your lineage grants an ability on the E key, with a visible cooldown. Two classic mistakes: firing it off "just to see," then missing it at the critical moment — and for Narwhal-lineage players, charging into empty water, which stuns your own ship. An active ability is spent like gold: at the right moment.
6. Forgetting to spend your stat points
Every level grants points to distribute across your stats (Rate of Fire, Ram for collision damage, etc.). Unspent points are power sitting idle while your opponents have already invested theirs. Do a full pass of your stats every time you level up.
7. Thinking you're alone during an event
The merchant caravan has an escort. The Black Pearl isn't decorative. And when the screen announces "Haaland surges forth!", that's not an invitation. Dovion's events are opportunities for prepared players — for everyone else, they're traps announced with a fanfare.
8. Fleeing too late
The most human of all the mistakes: staying "five more seconds" in a losing fight. On Dovion, fleeing is an art of its own — turbo, islands as cover, complicit fog. The right moment to disengage is the moment you start asking yourself the question. It's all covered in the art of the escape.
The common thread behind all these mistakes
You may have noticed: these eight faults tell the same story. The beginner plays in the present — mining, shooting, moving forward. The good player plays in the near future: selling before sinking, fleeing before it's too late, checking the map before crossing. That small gap in anticipation is the entire difference between a three-minute match and a thirty-minute one.
Theory's done, time for practice: Play Dovion for free and try to finish your next match without committing a single one of the eight. Good luck with number 8.
