10 Games Like Agar.io (But Better?)

· 3 min read · by the Dovion crew

Agar.io invented a feeling: growing by devouring others, always knowing something bigger is lurking somewhere. If you're looking for a game like Agar.io, it's probably that feeling you want back — the fragile rise, the sudden fall, the "okay, one more." Good news: a decade of io games has remixed that formula in every direction. Here are 10 alternatives worth your time, all free and playable in the browser.

The same formula, differently

  1. Slither.io — the most obvious alternative: you grow by eating orbs, but unlike Agar, your size doesn't protect you. A tiny snake can take down a giant. Tenser, fairer.
  2. Hole.io — you're a black hole swallowing an entire city: lampposts, cars, buildings, then other holes. Agar's loop, with an urban backdrop.
  3. Wormate.io — a sweeter Slither, with power-ups and candy. More approachable, very pleasant on mobile.
  4. Digdig.io — you dig through the terrain, you grow, you swallow others. Agar's idea applied to solid ground, with real tactical depth in the tunnels.
  5. Mope.io — the food chain: you start as a mouse, you end as a dragon. Eat and be eaten, but with evolution tiers that give you a clear goal.

The enriched formula: grow AND progress

This is the great lesson from Agar's successors: hunger alone isn't always enough — you need a plan.

  1. Deeeep.io — the food chain, ocean edition, from plankton to orca, with varied habitats (reefs, depths, surface). Rich and surprisingly strategic.
  2. Diep.io — here you no longer eat, you shoot: but the "farm, climb, dominate, lose it all" loop is the same, enriched with levels, stats, and classes. Our Diep.io guide explains it all.
  3. EvoWars.io — a melee arena where every level transforms your character and lengthens your weapon. Agar's growth, up close and personal.
  4. Paper.io 2 — growing, yes, but in territory: you draw loops to expand your zone, risking your trail every time you venture out.

The big leap: the sea

  1. Dovion.io — our "better?" pick, and we own the question mark. On paper, it's far from Agar: a top-down multiplayer naval battle in a pastel archipelago inspired by Ghibli films. But play five minutes and you'll recognize everything: you start tiny (a Chaloupe, your starting boat), you accumulate (gold, XP), you grow (31 hulls, 9 lineages, levels up to 50), and the danger grows with you — up to the map-center bosses that prioritize the biggest players. The fear of the giant, but with cannons, sirens, and football in the open sea. The full head-to-head is here: Dovion vs. Agar.io.

How to choose?

Deep down, Agar.io has no equal because it was first — but it has excellent heirs. The most ambitious one is waiting for you at sea: Play Dovion for free, and come check whether "better" is deserved.
