Group Boss Fights in Dovion (Without Getting Your Loot Stolen)

· 3 min read · by the Dovion crew

A boss in an io game creates a deliciously twisted problem: it's too big for you alone, so you need allies — but in a game where everyone's playing for their own leaderboard spot, today's "ally" is tomorrow's rival one second later. On Dovion, where the Amiral pounds away without ever tiring, where the Gardien comes back from the dead roughly every 25 seconds, and where Haaland (an openly self-aware parody, worth repeating) "shows up" more often than his fair share, group boss fighting is a balancing act: cooperate enough to win, stay wary enough to not get fleeced.

The handshake-free coalition

Dovion has no free-text chat — emotes and the gameplay itself carry the entire conversation. A boss alliance is therefore improvised purely through behavior: you shoot the boss, I shoot the boss, we're "allies." That unspoken contract has invisible clauses that good players honor instinctively:

A well-timed emote — a friendly wave on arrival, for instance — sets the tone better than any sentence could.

The natural role split

Without a word exchanged, an effective group organizes itself around each line's strengths:

  1. Tanks up front. The sturdy hulls of the War path pull the boss's attention. On Dovion, a crucial detail: the center's bosses prioritize big level-30+ players. If that's you, the lightning-rod role isn't a choice — it's your status. Build your positioning around it.
  2. Gunners on the flanks. Torpedoes, Broadsides, Storm: the steady damage that actually melts the health bar, from a safe distance.
  3. Support specialists. The Profondeurs (Depths) line has a unique raid asset: the Gong des profondeurs (Deep Gong) heals everything around it — a Léviathan gonging at the right moment keeps the whole front line standing. The Pièges (Traps) line can channel movement with its Estacades (stake barriers).
  4. Opportunists on the edges. Let's be honest — there will always be some. Better to know they're there and read their intentions while you work.

The real fight starts when the boss dies

The boss goes down, and the thousand-doubloon question hits: who scoops the loot? This is THE moment coalitions dissolve — everyone's hurt, abilities are on cooldown, and the loot is floating right in the middle. Three survival rules for this critical phase:

Should you even go?

A question never asked, always relevant. A boss raid exposes you for a long stretch, drains your resources, and pins you to a position the whole room now knows. If your run is already excellent — hold recently sold, a leaderboard spot to defend — the boss might be one risk too many. On the flip side, right in the middle of a mid-game power spike, it's often the perfect accelerator. A boss is a tempo tool, not a moral obligation.
