The Burst Damage Build: Melt Hulls Before They Can React
Three seconds. Sometimes that's all that separates a healthy ship from a sinking wreck. The burst damage build in Dovion runs on one simple, brutal idea: if the enemy doesn't have time to understand what's happening, they don't have time to defend. No war of attrition, no endless dance — one attack window, one burst, and you move to the next target. Here's how to build that hull-melting machine, and how to survive being one yourself.
Anatomy of a burst
A damage build comes down to one question: how much health can you strip away during YOUR attack window? Two levers feed directly into that in Dovion:
- Rate of Fire, one of the stats you spend points on every level. The more often you shoot, the more every second of enemy exposure costs them.
- Your line's active ability (the E key, with a visible cooldown). This is what turns good damage into a real burst — a volley, a spread, a bolt of lightning — a spike the opponent can't heal through in real time.
The rest of your points go toward setting up that burst: enough survivability to weather a counterattack, and enough mobility to pick the moment of contact.
The hardest-hitting lines
Three lines on the tree are built for the "melt and leave" playstyle:
- Torpedoes (Torpilleur → Cotre-lame → Foudre des mers): the Éventail de torpilles fires 3 torpedoes at once — 5 at level 45. On a target that isn't expecting it, that's a wall of damage arriving in a single wave.
- Broadsides (Frégate → Navire de ligne → Dreadnought): the Grande Bordée fires both sides at once. Lined up well, it's one of the hardest damage spikes in the game — and the recoil can double as a dash to reposition afterward (the well-known recoil-surf).
- Storm (Galion → Galion royal → Galion d'Orage): you hold the Chaîne d'orage to charge it, release, and the bolt arcs from hull to hull. Against a tight group, every bounce is free damage.
Special mention to the Narval and its Charge: damage scales with your speed, making it a fearsome collision burst — but be careful, charging into empty water stuns you too. We cover this family in detail in the line dedicated to ramming.
Picking your window: the real skill of the damage build
Your burst is your most precious resource, and it has a cooldown. Wasting it on a healthy target that can just run away hands the enemy a free fight. Good windows to look for:
- A ship already engaged elsewhere — it can't spare you its attention.
- A weakened hull heading back to sell — a clean last hit is an art of its own.
- An opponent pinned against an island or an Estacade, with nowhere to run.
And the flip side: if your E ability is on cooldown, you're not a predator anymore, you're just another ship. Fall back, farm, wait it out.
Fragility, by design
A damage build takes on risk by construction: what you invested in offense, others put into their hull. Two habits make up for it. First, active dodging — reading enemy trajectories saves you from trading damage you can't afford to take. Second, disengagement discipline: after a kill, the worst mistake is sitting still with an empty ability while scavengers close in. Strike, grab the loot, move.
Also remember to empty your hold regularly: a gold-laden assassin becomes a bounty target themselves, and hold management is the classic Achilles' heel of offensive players.
