"What's the Best Beginner Ship?"
"What's the best boat?" — every new Dovion player asks it, and it deserves an honest answer: there's no single best ship in absolute terms. The 31-hull tree is balanced so every line has its strengths and its counters. That said, some ships genuinely are easier to learn than others. If you're just starting out, here are the picks that will get you improving without the frustration.
At level 5: the Brigantin, without hesitation
Your first choice comes at level 5, among three paths: the fast Goélette, the sturdy Brigantin, and the big-hold Chalutier. For a beginner, our recommendation is clear: the Brigantin.
The reason comes down to one thing: room for error. The War path is the sturdiest of the three — you'll survive your positioning mistakes, you'll have time to understand how a fight unfolds, and you'll learn the fundamentals without respawning every two minutes. The Goélette punishes mistakes, the Chalutier already demands good risk assessment; the Brigantin, meanwhile, forgives. The full comparison of all three paths is in Goélette, Brigantin, or Chalutier?.
At level 15: the lines that forgive
The real choice comes at level 15, when the 9 lines in the tree open up. All of them are viable, but three stand out for how forgiving they are to beginners:
- Bordées (Frégate → Navire de ligne → Dreadnought). The most readable game plan in the game: get broadside-on, fire, and trigger the Great Broadside when the enemy lines up. No mandatory finesse to be effective — subtleties like the recoil-surf will come later, on their own.
- Pièges (Caboteur → Forteresse flottante → Brûle-Flots). Dropping an Estacade is rarely a mistake: worst case, you have a wall; best case, you saved your life. A defensive line that teaches you positioning — the single most valuable skill in the game.
- Profondeurs (Baleinier → Jonque au trésor → Léviathan des Abysses). The Gong heals everything around you: every mistake you take can be walked back. And the big fishing income keeps your progress steady even when fights go badly.
The lines to save for later
Two gorgeous but demanding branches are best left for your second or third evening:
- Narval: the Charge deals damage based on your speed, but charging into empty water stuns you instead. A thrilling mechanic that punishes exactly the beginner's #1 flaw — haste.
- Spectre: the Dead Sails on the Vaisseau Fantôme are fearsome... in the hands of a player who already knows the map, enemy habits, and danger zones. Without that game knowledge, invisibility just helps you get lost quietly.
The real "best ship" is your third one
One last piece of advice that beats every guide out there: the best beginner ship is the one from your third match. The first teaches you the controls, the second teaches you to die stupidly (everyone goes through it), and the third is when you actually start playing. A Dovion match restarts in seconds — use that to test, sink, and start over.
And once you're feeling comfortable, the full comparison of all 9 lines will help you find your definitive style.
