7 Pro Techniques That Work in Every .io Game
Agar.io, Diep.io, Slither.io, Dovion: these games look very different. Yet the best players apply the same principles in all of them. Once you know them, you improve faster in any .io game, even one you've just discovered. Here are the seven techniques that come up everywhere, with how to use them at sea in Dovion.
1. Kiting: hit while backing off
Kiting means attacking while keeping your distance. You shoot, you back off, you shoot again. The opponent chasing you takes damage without ever reaching you.
- In Diep.io: it's the core of how Snipers and fast tanks deal with Smashers.
- In Dovion: very effective with ranged lineages (Torpilles, Mortier, Orage) against a Narval trying to ram you. Always keep a clear escape route behind you.
2. Baiting: show weakness to lure them in
A player who looks hurt or alone attracts predators. Good players use that reflex: they look vulnerable… right in front of a trap, a teammate or an obstacle.
- In Agar.io: a small cell slipping past a virus to make a big chaser burst.
- In Dovion: luring a chaser between the Estacades of the Pièges lineage, or around an island where your lobbed fire is waiting.
3. Third-partying
When two players fight, the smartest one is often the one who waits for the duel to end to finish off the already weakened winner. It's cruel, but it's the law of every free-for-all .io game.
The reflex to build: before engaging, check who's lurking around. And if you win a duel, don't stay put collecting loot for too long. We explain how to spot these threats in our mini-map guide.
4. Use the environment
Map edges, obstacles and cover are weapons. A wall protects your back, a corner reduces attack angles.
- In Slither.io: trapping a snake against the edge.
- In Dovion: islands block cannonballs. Using them as a shield is one of the best survival techniques, detailed in Using islands as cover. Careful: the Mortier fires right over them.
5. Have a farm route
Beginners wander. Good players follow a circuit: a loop through resource-rich areas that avoids the dangerous ones. The result: they level up twice as fast without taking more risks.
In Dovion, ores and easy targets are spread across the whole map, and the center is the richest but also the most dangerous. Build your loop on the outskirts, then move toward the center once your ship is ready.
6. Know when to disengage
A lost fight doesn't have to end with your death. Pros leave fights early, before they're too hurt to escape. Surviving with half your health means keeping all your progress.
Signs it's time to go: your opponent is clearly higher level, a third player is coming, or your special ability is on cooldown. Our guide Escaping a stronger enemy gives you concrete moves.
7. Finish cleanly
A nearly dead enemy who escapes comes back stronger. Learn to secure kills: save your strongest shot or your active ability for the final blow, cut off the escape route instead of following in their wake. We walk through it step by step in Finishing off weakened ships.
The meta-technique: review your deaths
The last tip is worth all the others. After every death, ask yourself one question: what could I have seen coming? An off-screen player, a wasted ability, a fight accepted too late… Fixing one mistake at a time is enough to improve fast. Dovion helps you with its death screen and replay.
