Bonk.io Guide: Physics, Pushing, and the Best Maps

· 3 min read · by the Dovion crew

No weapons, no projectiles, no health bar: in Bonk.io, you win by pushing everyone else off the edge. A ball, an arena, physics — that's the whole game. This radical minimalism hides one of the funniest .io games to play with friends, and one of the deepest at a high level: every contact is a calculation of momentum, mass, and timing. A guide to pushing cleanly (and not getting pushed yourself).

The Concept: Sumo on Balls

Each player controls a round ball in an arena dotted with platforms. The goal: stay alive while everyone else falls off. You move around, build momentum, and above all use the game's signature mechanic: going heavy (holding the dedicated key). Heavy, you push harder and resist impacts better — but your trajectory control suffers. The entire duel in Bonk.io comes down to this dilemma: when to go heavy, when to go light again.

Heavy Mode: The Game's Only Stat

Beginners stay heavy the whole time "to be strong." Classic mistake: a heavy ball that whiffs its push just keeps sailing straight ahead… often right off the edge. Good players alternate like boxers:

  1. Light to position yourself: move around, dodge, pick your angle.
  2. Heavy on impact, a split second before contact — that's maximum push.
  3. Light again right after to recover and reposition.

Add in the use of the terrain (bounces off walls, slopes that add speed) and you'll understand why veteran duels look like competitive billiards.

The Maps: An Endless Game

Bonk.io's other treasure is its map editor. The community has produced thousands of arenas: classic sumo layouts, obstacle courses, trap maps, entirely invented game modes. A good chunk of the game's longevity comes from this — no two nights ever play the same. Join custom rooms and you'll find house rules that are sometimes brilliant; build your own map and you'll hand yours to everyone else. Up to eight players per room: the perfect format for a group, right alongside the other gems in our roundup of .io games to play with friends — and for two players on the same couch, check out our .io games for 2 players.

Three Tips That Change Everything

The Art of the Push, Naval Edition

If collision physics is what makes you laugh in Bonk.io, we've got two pieces of good news. First: that exact thrill exists in naval form. In Dovion, the free naval battle .io game, the Ram stat boosts collision damage, and an entire lineage — the Narval (ram hull) — is built around the ramming charge: bow-first, damage scaling with speed (and a self-stun if you charge into empty water — Bonk players will appreciate the poetic justice). Second: Dovion also hides soccer on the open sea, where you score by pushing a ball with your ship — literally Bonk.io with sails. Play Dovion for free, and may momentum be with you.
